What is Acne?
Acne refers to the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that commonly appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. It is caused when hair follicles become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, encouraging the growth of bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). This can trigger inflammation, leading to breakouts.
Factors contributing to acne include:
•Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, or when starting/stopping birth control pills
•Heredity or family history of acne
•Certain medications like lithium
•Use of greasy cosmetics
•Friction or pressure from helmets, backpacks, or tight clothing
•Environmental factors such as pollution and high humidity
While acne is most common in teenagers, adults of any age can also develop acne. Although acne affects both men and women equally, men are more likely to experience severe acne.
Types of Acne Lesions
•Comedones: Blackheads and whiteheads
•Pimples: Inflammatory lesions on the skin’s surface
•Nodules and Cysts: Large, painful lumps beneath the skin
These lesions, if untreated, can lead to scarring and emotional distress.
Preventing Acne Worsening
To minimize breakouts and prevent infections, it’s essential to avoid picking or squeezing pimples. Other factors that can worsen acne include:
•Hard scrubbing or excessive cleansing
•Rubbing or friction from clothing, helmets, or bags
•Environmental factors like pollution or high humidity
It’s recommended that only a dermatologist treats active acne to prevent infection and scarring.

When hair follicles become plugged, sebum cannot reach the surface of the skin. This blocked sebum promotes the growth of bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes) beneath the skin, which in turn produce chemicals and enzymes that attract white blood cells, causing inflammation. Eventually the follicle wall breaks down and the sebum, skin cells and bacteria erupt to form lesions or pimples. The trapped sebum encourages the growth of bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes) beneath the skin, which release chemicals and enzymes that attract white blood cells, leading to inflammation.
